Destruction 2
Cultural fusion in Omo Valley
Karn Karnjanamai shows two of his varied portraits on canvas, which he dedicates to the traditions of Ethiopia's Omo Valley. The women's faces are painted with patches of color, and their heads are crowned by woven grass wreaths adorned with flowers and feathers. The intense gaze of one of them, directed at us, touches us just as much as the wide-open eyes of the other one. With the silvery-grey veiled versions of his "Cultural Fusions", the artist points beyond their fascinating beauty to the danger of falsification and even destruction of cultures in their appropriation by others—a central problem of our globality.
